Starting a Library PDF Print E-mail

What do you need to start a library?  Well, very little actually.  A library can be a trolley you can wheel out.  Many a book lover has been inspired by their primary school book trolley and story time under a shady tree.  But if your school or community library is in a building, then you only need (in order of importance) six easy things:

  1. A motivated person who loves reading and sharing information
  2. A collection of books organized into sections
  3. A method of sharing those books among people in an easy effective way
  4. Bookshelves clearly labeled
  5. A space or room organized into zones
  6. A notice board and/or display place to showcase new or topical info

Teachers are often confused about exactly how libraries can contribute to any student’s learning.  This is because, in so many South African schools, already over-burdened teachers are asked to ‘teach library’ (shudder) as well as mark and assess work.  It is seen as an ‘extra-curricular activity’ much like sport.
